Resolution isn't quality
Two videos can both be "1080p" and look completely different. What actually determines sharpness is bitrate — how many bits per second the platform spends encoding the file. A 720p source encoded at a high bitrate beats a 1080p file crushed to half its size. When a downloader offers variants, the highest-bitrate one is usually the right pick, even if its resolution label is lower.
How platforms transcode
Every platform re-encodes uploads into a ladder of streams: one file per resolution tier, each tuned for different connection speeds. The player switches between tiers as your network fluctuates. A downloader's job is to grab the top rung of that ladder — the variant the platform shows only to viewers with fast connections.
- Phone viewing: 720p is indistinguishable from 1080p at typical screen sizes.
- TV or monitor playback: always take the highest available bitrate.
- Editing later: take the source file — every re-save costs quality.
- Slow connections: a lower tier that plays smoothly beats a stuttering top tier.
Avoid double re-encoding
Every time a video is re-encoded — by an app that "converts" it, or a screen recorder capturing it — quality is lost permanently. Source-file downloads skip that step entirely: the bytes you receive are the bytes the platform stored. That's why a downloaded MP4 usually looks better than the same clip recorded off the screen, even at identical resolution.
